ENGINEERING FOR KIDS

Electronic Game Design, Dates: Feb. 21, 28, Mar. 6, 13, 20, 27 Students will have the opportunity to create their own video game in this fun, stimulating electronic game design program for kids.

Winter Break Camps: Dec 26-30

Morning Camp- Aerospace Engineering - 9:00 am to Noon Students will utilize the Engineering Design Process to create and build a variety of flying machines. Rocketry is one of the main components of this camp, and students will have the opportunity to construct their very own straw rockets and bottle rockets! Students will also get the chance to create their own colorful model hot air balloon and design parachutes for a toy jumper. Students will close the program by looking at different forms of air transportation and simulating a lunar landing with a marshmallow "astronaut" that must survive being dropped from space.

Afternoon Camp - Electrical Engineering - 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm The Electrical Engineering program will allow students to build squishy circuits, solar fans, magnetic levitation vehicles, and complex circuits in a fun and safe learning environment. Kids will learn the basic concepts of electronic circuitry and will be able to build their own from scratch.

What is your 2012 Resolution?

...Organize your life, improve your health, lose weight, exercise, perhaps spend more time with your family! How about volunteering!!!

Times have changed since the 1950’s and 60’s heyday of the Welcome Wagon, when new residents were greeted to their new homes with flowers, information and coupons. The pace of life has increased. People are much more transient – the Southlake community experienced a 12 percent resident turnover this past year alone. There’s greater emphasis on work and obligation, leaving people less time to stay home and get to know their neighbors. As a result, there is an even greater need than ever for welcoming our neighbors, to start the process of building personal relationships in neighborhoods. Unlike many communities, Southlake is fortunate to have a recreational facility. Our facility serves as a wonderful place to welcome neighbors.

Millions of Americans volunteer to help others through schools, faith-based organizations, non-profits, hospitals, etc. Three basic reasons why individuals serve – Service strengthens our individual character and gives purpose to our lives and service is important to our Country. The power of volunteer service to touch the hearts and lives of others should not be underestimated. Of the two main reasons Americans give for not volunteering are (1) no one has asked, and (2) they do not know where and how to begin. Well — we are asking and here’s how to begin...
